Our Farmers’ Markets

Sprouts of Promise operates California Certified Farmers’ Markets in Playa Vista, Westwood Village, Costa Mesa, and Newport Beach. All of our markets carry the name, Farmer Mark, after our founder Mark Anderson.

California Certified Farmers’ Markets are the real deal. These markets are overseen by the state Board of Agriculture, to guarantee that farmers grow what they sell. The Board of Ag regularly visits farms, and markets, comparing what’s on the tables with what’s in the fields, and assuring Californians that they’re getting farm-fresh, locally-grown goods.

Help a Family, Help a Farmer

Our Help a Farmer, Help a Family program purchases fresh local produce from farmers, and donates it to formerly un-housed families at the Westwood Transitional Village. Along with donations, we provide hands-on cooking classes for kids and parents. Families who were recently living without kitchens might not have a ready recipe for kale or kohlrabi. These classes inspire people to incorporate more veggies into their weekly meals.

Community Compost Hub

Build humus not landfills! In landfills, rotting food scraps give off methane, a greenhouse gas 84 times more potent than CO2. But when composted, food scraps become soil-building humus. Compost fights climate change by promoting plant growth. It also returns to the soil, nutrients that plants took, closing the loop and reducing farmers' need for fertilizer.

Our Thursday Westwood Village market and our Saturday Playa Vista market have Community Compost Hubs. These are places where neighbors can drop off their household food scraps and yard waste.

Farmer to Classroom

Inside and outside of our markets, Sprouts hosts educational programs. Our Saturday Markets In Playa Vista and Costa Mesa have KidsZones, where children learn about vegetables through activities like market scavenger hunts, hands-on activities, and story time.

Our Farmer to Classroom Program brings farmers into elementary schools for interactive and sessions. Kid’s can don a beekeepers uniform or get to know a goat.

School Garden Program

Farmer Mark can lend his expertise to consult on a School Garden program, making gardening and farming an integrated lesson in the curriculum.

Market KidsZone

Healthy habits start young. Our market-based KidsZones are a fun space for kids to build connections with the farmers’ market and its produce organically on their own terms.

Chef-to-Farmer

Local chefs highlight seasonal produce with in market cooking demonstrations, samples, and tips! This program is currently suspended due to COVID-19.
